It’s something that he doesn’t see changing in the future.

“I’ve been an independent artist long before it was cool to be an independent artist. This has allowed me to be free to create music that makes me happy; in turn, it makes my fans happy,” Aguilar says. “I’m not subject to the financial whims that record labels are subject to. I guess you can define it as being able to go by my own schedule, as you say.”

Music lives in Aguilar’s veins.

He is the son of Mexican singers-actors Antonio Aguilar and Flor Silvestre. Pepe Aguilar played his first concert at age 3, joining his father onstage at Madison Square Garden in New York City in 1971.

And the family tradition continues as Aguilar’s children – Leonardo and Angela – have followed suit.

“I have to tell you, it feels great,” he says of having his children on tour with him. “Having the chance of working and traveling along with the people that matter most in my life is a joy that few can enjoy. I don’t think that was part of the plan. My wife and I are the parents, not the owners, of our children. Both Angela and Leonardo chose this path. It makes me extremely happy, but I see that they are very happy themselves doing this. Rather than plan, I’m lucky that things turned out this way.”

The Grammy Award winner recently celebrated a milestone when he turned 50 on Aug. 7.

Looking forward, he still wants to accomplish a lot in music.

“I still think that there is still a lot to be done in music. Audiences’ tastes change now quicker than ever; audiences themselves change very rapidly these days,” he says. “I am happy that I am allowed by my fans to keep on doing what I love to do: singing and bringing them joy with my shows. I love my career, and I love what I do. … The career I chose is a career of regular beginnings. If you want to do things the right way, you have to start all over again with every new release, with every new show. I believe this is the nature of the business: You build by renewing all the time.”

For his current tour, Aguilar has turned to social media to keep in contact with his fans.

And he’s not afraid of sharing the highs and lows of life on the road.

“Each tour presents itself with its own set of challenges,” he says. “You can see a lot of the challenges – and a lot of these joys in my weekly vlog on YouTube. In my case, I definitely think it has gotten better, as I am able to travel with my family both for work and for play.”

As for new music, Aguilar is preparing a vinyl package of remastered versions of his recordings, to be released in early 2019.

And he’s writing more music.

“I believe it has evolved for the better. It has become more efficient, less cumbersome, in a way I think it has become happier,” he says of his writing and recording process. “(My main goal) is more about connecting with the audience.”
