By now, most have probably heard that Philadelphia 76ers star Ben Simmons was denied entry at the Crown Casino in his native Melbourne, Australia.

Simmons and a group of friends were denied entry to the establishment while one member of his crew, who happened to be Caucasian, wasn’t. This led Simmons to claim he was a victim of racial profiling.

The Crown Casino also released a statement denying that the incident had anything to do with racial profiling. According to the establishment, Simmons was asked for his identification and when he gave it, was permitted entry. According to the casino, they require identification from anyone who they believe looks to be under the age of 25. This is to ensure that nobody under the age of 18 enters the casino floor.

At this point, it appears this is a classic “he said, he said” story. But the accusation is not a good look on the casino’s part, especially when factoring in Simmons’ popularity in Australia and worldwide. If Simmons and his friends were simply asked for identification, it doesn’t explain why Simmons felt discriminated against. It also begs the question as to whether all but his Caucasian friend were, and if so, why.
